On this day in 1984, Hammie Nixon died in his hometown of Brownsville, Tennessee at the age of 76. Born on January 22nd, 1908, Nixon began his career as a harmonica player, playing with jug bands in the 1920s. Although he also played kazoo, guitar, piano, washboard and jug, he helped pioneer the use of the harmonica as a rhythm instrument in a band setting. A partner of Sleepy John Estes for half a century, Nixon also recorded with artists such as Little Buddy Doyle, Son Bonds and dozens more.
